Sweat Function

Senin, 07 Februari 2011

Sweat is water released by the sweat glands in the skin of mammals. The main content of sweat is sodium chloride (the main ingredient of table salt) in addition to other materials (that emit smells) like a 2-metilfenol (o-cresol) and 4-metilfenol (p-cresol).

In humans, sweat issued to regulate body temperature, although there who think that the component of male sweat can act as pheromon.

Evaporation of sweat from the skin surface has a cooling effect due to latent heat of evaporation of water removes heat from the skin. Therefore, in hot weather, or when the muscles heat up due to hard work, sweat is produced. Perspiration increases in a state of nervousness and nausea, and decreased in a state of fever. The animals that have few sweat glands, such as dogs, lowering body temperature by opening his mouth sambul tongue (breathing hard), so the water evaporates from the oral cavity and pharynx her. Primates and horses, have sweat glands in the armpit, such as in humans.

Sweat glands

There are two kinds of sweat glands which differ in composition of sweat produced and their functions:

  • ekrin sweat glands spread across the surface of the body but there are more palms, soles of the feet, and face. The sweat produced is water containing various salts. These glands function as a regulator of body temperature.
  • apocrine sweat glands produce sweat that contains fat. These glands are mainly present in the armpits and around the genitals. Activity of these glands produce odor due to bacterial activity which breaks down the organic components of sweat produced.

Sweat Function

There are about three million sweat glands in the human body with the highest concentration of sweat glands is in the palm of the hand. For if sweat?

On average, each person spend about 0.7 to 1.5 liters per hour. A person who actively sweating about 1.5 to 1.8 per hour. Meanwhile, triathlete can produce up to four liters of sweat in an hour. That is, we sweat production depends on the size, physical fitness, and hydration level of a person.

According to physiologists from the University of Guelph in Canada, Lawrence Spriet, after losing three to five percent by weight of the body, then the sweat starts to slow down. Meanwhile, environmental and exercise physiologists, Lawrence Armstrong, said the human body continues to sweat despite the dehydration. "During the hypothalamus sends neural messages to the sweat glands, humans will still be sweating. In fact, if the sweat stops then something is wrong," said Armstrong.

If our body temperature above 40 degrees Celsius, our bodies begin to overheat. When this occurs, tissue membranes lose integrity and leak, said Armstrong. Under these conditions, the intestine can release bacteria into the bloodstream. As a result of the body exposed to shock and possibly fainting, or coma.

"The main point of sweating is to prevent this from happening, to keep us cool," said Armstrong.
