Sweat Function

Sweat is water released by the sweat glands in the skin of mammals. The main content of sweat is sodium chloride (the main ingredient of table salt) in addition to other materials (that emit smells) like a 2-metilfenol (o-cresol) and 4-metilfenol (p-cresol).

In humans, sweat issued to regulate body temperature, although there who think that the component of male sweat can act as pheromon.

There are two kinds of sweat glands which differ in composition of sweat produced and their functions:


  • ekrin sweat glands spread across the surface of the body but there are more palms, soles of the feet, and face. The sweat produced is water containing various salts. These glands function as a regulator of body temperature.
  • apocrine sweat glands produce sweat that contains fat. These glands are mainly present in the armpits and around the genitals. Activity of these glands produce odor due to bacterial activity which breaks down the organic components of sweat produced.

There are about three million sweat glands in the human body with the highest concentration of sweat glands is in the palm of the hand. For if sweat?
