Canadian Residents Fertility levels Supreme


Ottawa, - Canadians fertility rate rose to reach 1.66 in 2007 compared to the previous year, 1.59, highest since 1992, according to statistics Canada, which aired Tuesday.

In 2007, as many as 367,864 babies are born, the most since 1995. Compared to the year 2006, the number was up as much as 13,247, or 3.7 percent, the fastest annual increase since 1989.

Women aged 30 to 34 gave birth to 115,415 babies, or slightly less than half the babies born in 2007, more than other age groups and the second year in a row they lead all age groups.

All women aged 30 years and over is 56 percent of all women who gave birth, she said.

However, the report said Canada's fertility rate, of 1.66, still below the replacement fertility rate, 2.1 children per woman, or the fertility rate needed to replace the residents themselves from one generation to the next.

According to statistics Canada, other than Canada, other countries with low fertility rates such as the United States, Australia, Spain and Sweden also experienced an increase in their fertility rates in 2007.
